Frequently asked questions

We are asked many questions about buying, owning, maintaining and repairing pianos because people are often considering ownership for the first time. We are always happy to chat to discuss your questions by phone our email (or visit our showroom) so please do contact us. Here are some of the more common enquiries.

This varies depending on the age of the piano and the variation in temperature and humidity in the room. Pianos made since the 1970’s are usually more stable than older ones because construction methods changed about that time. The more constant the atmosphere is, the better the tuning will usually hold. Many pianos in the home only need an annual tuning, but older models in a room with a lot of temperature variation could well need a six monthly tune.

We charge £80 for tuning throughout our tuning area, which is about 40 miles from Sleaford in most directions, as long as we can combine several appointments to make the journey viable. We visit most areas on a 2-3 week rotation so there isn’t usually too long to wait. If the job is more urgent we will always try to fit it in quickly, but we sometimes have to make an additional mileage charge for these special journeys.

Yes. We can do many small repairs in situ, often alongside a tuning visit, or sometimes broken parts might need to be taken to our workshop for repair. Broken strings can also be replaced – most of these are cut from various gauges of music wire which we stock, but strings for the lower notes are individual and need to be copied from the broken original. Costs for small repairs vary from an extra £10 onto a tuning fee, to larger amounts depending on the time needed. We always discuss costs with customers before going ahead with any work.

If your piano has moved from another property the changes in temperature and humidity between the 2 locations will upset the tuning. Allow 10-12 weeks after the removal for the piano to acclimatise before the tuning is done, but please contact us to book this in so that we can plan a visit at the right time. If it’s tuned too soon after the move it won’t have settled and the tuning might slip again quickly. Do use the piano in the meantime though – pianos should always be played! If you have only moved the piano away from the wall and back while decorating, for example, this shouldn’t upset the tuning at all.

We routinely travel 30-40 miles from Sleaford in most directions for tunings, but this does vary. Very roughly, our tuning area is within a line joining these main towns on a map – Lincoln and villages north, Market Rasen, Louth, Mablethorpe, Skegness, Boston, Long Sutton, Wisbech and surrounding villages, Holbeach, Spalding, The Deepings, Peterborough, Stamford, Oakham and Uppingham, Grantham, Newark, Southwell, the eastern side of Nottingham, and Gainsborough. Inevitably there are exceptions though! Please contact us and we’ll be happy to confirm.

Yes, with some limitations. We have all the specialist equipment to move grands up to about 2m (6′ 6″) in length, and all uprights. We only take on ground-floor removals because stairs work usually needs extra man-power, and distances above about 80-100 miles are uneconomical for a special journey. Please contact us for a quote. We can recommend other specialist carriers for longer distances and stairs work.
